I run a freelance video editing studio and a coding studio, and on top of that I experiment with everything I can get my hands on, from 3D work to projects around the house. And my projects are all over the place and finding my way around folders was hell.
So I wanted to build some kind of organization script for all of it and it started small, with just creating folders from preset templates. And every day for like the past 5 months I have iterated and iterated on it to a project manager and project folder creator who's mission is to be fast, robust and light. I went from the Pro to the Max subscription and it has been quite the journey.
That script is now Fast Folder 3.15. It has grown past 100,000 lines of Rust with 1,390 tests, and somewhere around the summer it got away from me completely. It is also what pulled me deep into coding, and along the way I became fascinated by software that is thoroughly tested. And I think it is the right way to code with AI agents. The tests also slow down the agent making it run for extended amounts of time without running into the 5 hour limit.
Fast-folder doesn't have a database, it forms it using real project folders that you have created with fast-folder. They have a small metadata file inside that is a simple PROJECT_INFO.md. And it does this blazingly fast, even on project bases on a bit of slower sources like a network share.
Today every project I have lives in one library across all my drives and machines. Each one has a permanent ID, so `fastf open 47` or a word from the name takes me straight there. You can search only projects, grab a path, open a terminal inside one or cd into it with a single command. That makes jumping between projects and coding on them with AI agents really easy.
Templates build each new project the same way, and it uses the variables that you put into it during the creation process Moves between drives are verified file by file, and the tests torture the program, and it uses a moving algorithm that you can kill the program, introduce drive problems, cut the network, cut the power whatever. Basically 1/4th of the repo is tests (24000+ lines)
There is a lot more than fits in one post and the video. It is one light binary, MIT licensed and tested on Windows, Arch, Ubuntu and Mint. I use it every single day.
And the funny thing is that this has like 2 stars on Github, I haven't shared this with a single soul until now which I am trying to get some eyes on it. Looking forward to hear your thoughts.
