Claude sur Raspberry Pi 5

built the budget version of the mac mini + claude setup with a raspberry pi 5 ($173 all in)

r/ClaudeAIu/launchwithben30 septembre 2026

wanted the whole "mac mini running claude 24/7" thing but cheaper, so i grabbed a pi 5 budget kit (4gb). heads up, "budget kit" means the pi and not much else. had to grab a few extra things off amazon before i could really do anything. about $173 all in. why my macbook is my main machine. if it goes to sleep, claude goes to sleep too. that's fine for normal (paid) work, but sometimes i just want to hand claude a brain dump, go to bed, and come back to a live website. or you know, the boring stuff that really doesn't need someone watching it. why a pi and not a mac mini i'd been thinking about a mac mini for exactly this. but ~$400-800 for a side project felt steep. to be clear, i'm not comparing a 4gb pi to a mac mini spec wise, they're not the same thing. but for fairly light work, 4gb is more than enough. setting it up after the first boot setup (username, wifi, language, timezone), and once i had the right sd card (more on that below), it was about 5 minutes until claude was running. honestly thought logging in over ssh was gonna be the hard part. it wasn't. ran claude, picked the subscription login, it spat out a url and a code, opened it on my phone, done. claude --print works from scripts after that, no api key anywhere. two things that bit me: • the sd card that came with the kit was 32 bit. the installer just said cannot execute: required file not found, which looks like a bad download but isn't. dpkg --print-architecture said armhf. reflashed to 64 bit and it was fine. • if anything says "press enter to open browser" over ssh, don't. gh did that to me and opened a text browser right inside my terminal. terrible to navigate, dead ends everywhere. with claude i just copied the url to my phone instead. now i just ssh in and run claude in tmux so it doesn't die when my laptop closes. a --print call takes about 10 sec, two sessions use under 1gb, and it sits around 50°C. wrote up the whole thing here, including the exact list of what i bought on top of the kit (and the one thing i didn't end up needing), plus a little script that checks your pi before you install: https://launchwithben.com/learn/claude-code/claude-code-raspberry-pi-5 happy to answer questions or help anyone looking at budget always-on agent setups.
